Our Most Important Job While We are Here (Overheard)

3 min read

A psychiatrist friend's one-line summary that reframes how we relate to our inner dialogue.

This morning I was listening to a friend talk about his extensive experience as a psychiatrist, therapist, and researcher. He summarized: "Our most important job while we are here is to make friends with our subconscious."

Our Internal Relationships

Most of our biggest challenges in life are made more complicated because of the inner dialogue we have. For some, it remains a balanced, pragmatic conversation. And maybe it does for us too, for the mundane things we aren't emotionally invested in. But when we are challenged to take action or push ourselves into new territory, sometimes the voices don't help.

Moving Forward

Becoming a friend to those voices that criticize, judge, berate, or oppress us takes time. But it rarely happens on its own. It needs a catalyst. Often this is the pain or fear that drags us to seek help. But finding that silver lining is where freedom emerges.
